-Can I meet you?

“I am Wahab Ayomide. I graduated from Adeleke University, where I studied Medical Laboratory science.”

-You mentioned on your LinkedIn post the challenges you faced during your extended six-year program at Adeleke University, how did you overcome them to achieve a first-class honour?

“Initially, I was admitted to study Anatomy. However, I later switched to Medical Laboratory Science, which extended my studies by an additional year. However, the decision was not mine and I was initially unhappy about it. I overcame the challenge by taking responsibility and viewing it as an opportunity to start afresh. With determination and the help of God, I aimed to make the best out of the situation”.

 

-What motivated you to pursue a career in Medical Laboratory Science, and how did your time at Adeleke University prepare you for this field?

“My passion for research began in high school, where I sought a field that would allow me to explore clinical research. This passion led me to Medical Laboratory Science. Adeleke University has significantly prepared me for this field through numerous medical conferences, laboratory workshops, and research fairs, all of which I attended and actively participated in”.

 

It’s everyone’s dream to bag a first class in their area of studies but not all get it. Could you share some of the study habits and strategies that contributed to your academic success in coming out with a 4.71/5.0 GPA?

“I view studying as a mental exercise and an opportunity to gain new knowledge, which keeps me updated in the scientific world. This perspective makes it easier for me to engage in daily reading, early morning study sessions, online research, long hours in the library, and active class participation”.

 

-You held several leadership positions, including President of the Faculty of Basic Medical Science and Chapter Director of your department. Can you discuss the skills and experiences you gained from these roles?

“During my time in school, I held several leadership positions where I acquired numerous skills, including negotiation, human management, entrepreneurship, conflict resolution, team spirit, and public speaking”.

 

-How did your involvement in community engagement and service impact your personal and professional growth?

“My involvement in various activities has significantly impacted my personal and professional growth. I connected with influential people, created a network of stakeholders and non-governmental organizations, and learned management, quality control skills, and emotional intelligence”.

 

-Could you share an example of a successful project or initiative you led at Adeleke University?

 

“I have organized health fairs, established an advocacy group on metabolic disorders (an obesity clinic), conducted public health campaigns on antimicrobial resistance, and led seminars and workshops on the Omics Revolution”.

 

-You mentioned the importance of mentorship in your journey. Who were your mentors, and what kind of impact did they have on you?

“I have benefited from multiple mentors, including Prof. Ndako James, Prof. Owolabi Sunday Ajao, Apostle Joshua Selman, Pastor Owolabi Oyeleke, Dr. Bashiru Oseni, and Dr. Deji Adeleke. 

From Prof. Ndako, I learned professional ethics; from Prof. Owolabi and Dr Bashiru, I learned excellence and resilience; from Prof. Owolabi and Dr Deji Adeleke, I learned community engagement and philanthropy; and from Pastor Owolabi and Apostle Joshua Selman, I learned about the importance of God in one’s journey and leadership”.

 

-What are your career aspirations in the field of Medical Laboratory Science and Health Advocacy?

“My goals include becoming a Professor of Chemical Pathology by the age of 38, an active politician in the Ministry of Health, and founding a renowned medical research and pharmaceutical laboratory in Africa”.

 

-How do you plan to continue making a positive impact on your community and the healthcare sector?

“I aim to contribute to the community by providing free medical check-ups for children and the elderly, conducting public health campaigns on vital community health concerns, and advocating for human reproductive health issues”.
